With Noise is a series of sound-sculpture installations that translate the affective qualities of friendship into a sensory environment. Developed in collaboration with four close friends, the works transform conversations and personally significant objects into resonant sculptural forms activated by transducers (contact speakers). Sound, composed from recorded conversations, travels through these materials—shaped by their density, size, and structure—producing subtle variations in vibration and pressure that are felt as much as heard. Deleted photos, emails, books, and articles are printed, shredded into strips, and woven back together, simultaneously concealing and preserving charged memories. They are supported and framed with various wood offcuts that are collected from my labor as a professional woodworker, alluding to the physical labor that sustains the very structures it is excluded from. In garment production, layers of fabric are cut away, leaving behind scraps, the negative space of&nbsp;the final products. These remnants serve as tangible proof of factory labor.&nbsp;They are rust-dyed with railroad spikes, recalling the exploited Chinese immigrant laborers who built the transcontinental railroad. Sewn edge-to- edge, the irregular shapes of the fabric scraps form unexpected, somewhat monstrous three-dimensional shapes. This project happened from May 15 to June 15, 2024, in Valga, Estonia, as a part of the residency program at VARES.&nbsp;I opened my studio as a repair shop and leveraged my skills as an artist, professional carpenter, and amateur seamster to repair local residents’ furniture and clothes. The core idea is to explore the potential of my labor for local communities and rebuild our relationship with everyday objects. Through conversations with residents, I aimed to highlight the unique stories and contexts of their relationships with their belongings. On the last day of the residency program, I held a one-day exhibition/event presenting the various objects I had repaired. All collaborators and local residents were invited to the event, offering a welcoming space for the community members to gather, interact, and reflect on what artistic labor can do for the community and what it means to repair, recycle, and rebuild our relationship with everyday objects, and to create a communal space for regathering. Idleground https://jinseokchoi.com/Idleground Sat, 21 Dec 2024 00:26:03 +0000 Jinseok Choi https://jinseokchoi.com/Idleground Idleground Idleground functions as communal seating, inspired by the Pyeongsang—communal seating commonly found on the streets, in parks, in front of corner stores, and in other locations in Korea during choi's childhood. These spaces served as gathering spots where residents could relax, converse, and build community. Today, Pyeongsangs are rare due to urban planning changes that segregate people by social class and privatize spaces, leading to societal polarization. This loss of public gathering spaces is a global issue, contributing to increased social isolation and polarization. This sculpture as furniture attempts to counter this ongoing isolation, using found materials—scrap wood from the artist's labor as a professional carpenter and scrap fabrics collected from local LA garment factories. These leftover materials are tactile proof of physical labor, signifying the unrecognized labor force that sustains Los Angeles’ infrastructure. It incorporates scrap fabric collected from Los Angeles and New York garment factories. Representing the negative space and waste product generated by workers and industry, the offcuts are sewn together and manifest an embodied collectivity while betraying their discrepant multitude, retaining their original shapes, textures and colors. The offcuts are marked with the railway spikes used in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. This evokes archival photographs such as “The Last Spike,” which documents the driving of the so-called last spike joining the eastern and western legs of the railway: it is important to note this image features only white men, despite the fact that most railway workers were Chinese immigrants. Countering this false narrative, I rust-dye the fabric scraps with railway spikes, which directly links the historical exploitation of migrant labor and present-day exploitation in the garment industry. Key visual elements — historical texts, images, and relevant hand drawings — are applied only onto those areas of the wall supported undetectably by studs. As the drawing expands and sprawls across the gallery walls, a hidden inner stud structure is revealed: a metaphor for the invisible and unacknowledged immigrant labor pool that has long sustained the American industries and construction of infrastructures. This wall drawing project expands as it continues to be informed by my ongoing research on the trajectory of immigrant workers and their contribution to the American society. <img width="2100" 5.5 (w) x 3.75 (D) inches The blue styrofoam plank was given by an artist, Shirley Tse, and it was part of one of her old sculptures carved with a handheld router. I traced Tse’s marks onto the wood plank to imitate her sculpting gestures. A woman named Lee, Hwaja had lived in the house and used the kitchen for over 20 years. I disassembled the kitchen furniture without cutting it and reassembled the components differently to make it resemble my room furniture. Working only with the components in Hwaja Lee's space, I created my room with my personal belongings.
