Flying Nimbus

Flying Nimbus is made from scrap wood, the leftover material from my labor. The nimbus shape comes from my childhood favorite cartoon, Dragon Ball Z, where the main character, Son Goku, rides it to fly. One of my earliest memories is of an action figure shaped like the nimbus—one of the first toys my mother bought me—while I don’t recall her ever buying anything for herself raising her children. Recreating the toy from the residue of my own labor is a way of revisiting that memory, reflecting on her domestic labor. Nearly 30 years later, through the intensity of my own labor, I have come to understand—if only partially—what she endured. The contrast between the physicality of the solid wood sculpture and the light, cloud-like form of the flying nimbus embodies both the weight of her sacrifices and the delayed realization of her devotion.
